Do Water Bottles Contain PFAS? Discover the PFAS-Free Alternative

July 31, 2025   Authored by   Karry

On April 30, 2025, the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) officially released the new testing standard EN 17681-1:2025 for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in textiles. This standard will come into effect on October 31, 2025, replacing the previous version, EN 17681-1:2022.[source] Its release marks the gradual phase-out of PFAS.

What are PFAS?

PFAS — including well-known representatives such as PFOA and PFOS — are man-made chemicals known for their excellent water, oil, and heat resistance. However, they degrade extremely slowly in nature. Once released into the environment or absorbed into the human body, they tend to persist indefinitely. For this reason, PFAS are often referred to as “forever chemicals.”

What are the risks of PFAS to human health?

  1. Threats to Reproductive Health
    • Reduced Female Fertility: Elevated levels of PFAS in the blood may reduce the likelihood of pregnancy by 30% to 40%, and have been linked to a higher risk of endometriosis and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)
    • Risks to Fetal Development: PFAS can cross the placenta and be transmitted through breast milk, potentially impairing nervous and immune system development in the fetus, and increasing the risk of miscarriage or birth defects.
  2. Increased Cancer Risk Long-term PFAS exposure has been associated with an increased risk of breast cancer, lung cancer, and colon cancer. Several PFAS compounds have been classified as possible carcinogens by international health agencies.
  3. Immune System Impairment PFAS may weaken the immune system, reduce the effectiveness of vaccines, and raise susceptibility to infections.
  4. Endocrine Disruption These substances can interfere with thyroid and sex hormone regulation, potentially leading to metabolic disorders, delayed puberty, and other hormone-related issues.
  5. Liver and Kidney Toxicity Chronic PFAS accumulation may impair liver and kidney function, contributing to the development of long-term health conditions.

Common sources of PFAS in everyday products

  • Cosmetics: PFAS are commonly found in waterproof mascara (82%), long-lasting lipsticks (62%), and various other makeup products to enhance durability and water resistance.
  • Waterproof Clothing: Includes items such as windbreakers, outdoor footwear, and garments made with GORE-TEX and similar water-repellent fabrics.
  • Food Packaging: Used in fast food containers, microwave popcorn bags, and grease-resistant paper to prevent oil absorption.
  • Household Items: Present in non-stick cookware (e.g., Teflon pans), carpets, and disposable paper cups due to their stain-, water-, and heat-resistant properties.

Does bottled water contain PFAS?

CR’s testing reveals that most bottled waters contain detectable PFAS, but the vast majority are below 1 ppt, with only a few (Tourmaline Spring, Deer Park, and Topo Chico) exceeding that threshold. This demonstrates that it is technologically feasible for companies to keep PFAS levels extremely low.

However, since PFAS are “forever chemicals” with cumulative and potentially harmful effects, voluntary guidance is not enough. Experts and CR urge the federal government to establish mandatory, science-based PFAS limits to protect public health and incentivize better filtration and quality control.[source]

PFAS in drinking water health effects

Americans drink about 15 billion gallons of bottled water annually, averaging 45 gallons per person. While convenient and sometimes perceived as safer than tap water, bottled water is not a long-term solution. Some bottled waters contain heavy metals and PFAS, and plastic bottle production contributes to water pollution. For safer hydration, reusable bottles made of glass, stainless steel, or silicone are recommended. If you do choose bottled water: don’t reuse single-use bottles, avoid heat exposure, and opt for purified products.[source]

Which bottled water has no PFAS?

Plant-based water bottles are emerging as a sustainable alternative to traditional plastic bottles, offering an environmentally friendly packaging solution. Made primarily from natural paper materials and combined with biodegradable barrier coatings, these bottles ensure the necessary sealing and protection for safe drinking water packaging. After use, they can be either recycled or naturally decomposed, significantly reducing plastic pollution. Compared to conventional plastic bottles, paper-based water bottles offer lower carbon footprints, reduced resource consumption, and minimized environmental impact, making them an ideal choice for today’seco-conscious consumers and sustainable markets.

Gvpak focuses on the research, development, and manufacturing of plant-based bottle containers, including paper bottles, paper cans, and paper lids. Our company is also dedicated to the development and application of eco-friendly barrier materials across various industries. It holds certifications for food contact safety of coated paper bottles, as well as test reports for high and low temperature resistance. Moreover, Gvpak has validated the barrier performance of its coated paper bottles, ensuring excellent protection against moisture.  With a wide range of bottle capacities and diverse applications, Gvpak’s paper bottles are suitable for use in packaging drinking water, personal care products, and more, demonstrating high versatility and strong market adaptability.

How do I avoid PFAS in daily life?

  • Choose products labeled “PFOA-Free” or “PFAS-Free”
  • Read labels on non-stick pans, cosmetics, rain gear, etc.
  • Avoid waterproofing sprays and stain-resistant coatings when possible
  • Support safer alternatives and companies that disclose chemical usage
